Khao Lak Scuba Adventures is the busiest and largest award winning PADI 5 Star CDC Career Development Center in Khao Lak with 7 liveaboards, going to the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock – some of the top 10 dive sites in the world.

We have our own purpose built dive pool, classrooms, IDC classroom and chilled study areas. With so many boats and lots of courses taking place, there are lots of opportunities to follow courses, get real-life experience of a busy dive shop, meet lots of customers of all abilities and skill levels, so that at the end of your course you have a good working knowledge to take with you on your future career.

Becoming an IDC Staff Instructor is a key step forward for any Instructor. It is fantastic for personal development, as now you can teach Assistant Instructors and assist on IDCs, but just as importantly it gives you the chance to share the real-life knowledge and experience that you have learned, with Instructor Candidates who are just starting out.

Once you’ve been teaching for a couple of years, it is easy to get stuck in a rut, doing the same courses week after week. Becoming a Staff Instructor gives you something extra and allows you to develop a ‘mentoring’ role. You learn how to assess and counsel IDC candidates, you’re able to give them the benefit of your experience, and show them ways of overcoming problems that may seem overwhelming to them, but routine for you.

Reviewing Standards

How much do you remember from your IDC? For most Instructors the Staff Instructor Course is an important review of PADI Standards, and a chance to see the IDC from the other side – it’s surprisingly different when you’re teaching rather than learning!

What’s involved

You’ll be in the IDC every day, assisting and participating with the instructor candidates. As you already know, some students feel more comfortable talking to the DM assisting on a course rather than the instructor who’s teaching it. This is the same case with becoming IDC Staff, you will get the chance the form a special bond with the students you’re helping. You’ll be assessing in water skills and demonstrations, doing some demonstrations yourself as well as giving role model standard presentations to the candidates and helping them with any and all questions that they have whether that’s in the classroom, pool or open water.

Moving forward

Many Dive Centres require a Staff Instructor rating for management or senior training positions. PADI IDC Staff Instructor is a pre-requisite for PADI Master Instructor rating, and is an important step towards Course Director.
